IoT Analytics Today and Tomorrow
Is IoT Analytics in Your Future?
Caterpillar is synonymous with heavy machinery. For more than 90 years, our products have helped our customers build a better world. We’ve also been driving industry-leading connectivity solutions for over 20 years, introducing our first telematics device in 1999. Today, Cat Digital’s team is supporting Caterpillar’s digital strategy through advanced analytics and IoT solutions.
With onboard computers, sensors, and cameras, a fleet of approximately one million connected assets transmit data. This includes time-series data, machine health alerts, fuel usage, and location. This data is used to deploy IoT analytics at scale, providing customers value via increased safety and productivity coupled with reduced cost of ownership. For example, analytics can help tell when a machine or part of a machine needs to be serviced or replaced, how to operate more effectively to increase production, how to reduce operational costs, how to increase service life, and more.
So, what is the future of this fast-growing field of IoT analytics? To answer this question, we will review the main trends and challenges in this field and the approaches to deliver IoT value at scale. In particular, we will address how IoT success goes beyond analytics, but also involves teaming with software engineering and commercial organizations to effectively deliver value to a global base of customers.
Since 1925, Caterpillar Inc. has been helping our customers build a better world – making sustainable progress possible and driving positive change on every continent.
With 2019 sales and revenues of $53.8 billion, Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. Services offered throughout the product life cycle, cutting-edge technology and decades of product expertise set Caterpillar apart, providing exceptional value to help our customers succeed. The company principally operates through three primary segments – Construction Industries, Resource Industries and Energy & Transportation – and provides financing and related services through its Financial Products segment.
